ENGLISH AS A SUBJECT IN KERALA GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS

ENGLISH COMPREHENSION IN KERALA SCHOOLS

With my experience as a teacher in various rural government schools, I have encountered many challenges while teaching English. In the beginning, being inexperienced, I struggled to find an effective method to help students understand and enjoy the subject.

I decided to start with vocabulary—familiar words that the children used in their daily lives.

I prepared charts with such words, each accompanied by a picture.

This visual support helped students develop graphic reading skills and associate the word with its meaning.

Gradually, I organized my action plan as follows:

·         Word charts displayed on all four walls of the classroom.

·         Simple sentences with humorous or funny meanings.

·         Dictation exercises allowing students to refer to the charts, but within a time limit.

·         Dictation without referring to the charts.

·         Displaying individual score sheets to spark healthy competition.

·         ‘Find and Touch’ games using the word charts.

·         Reading competitions using very simple and short passages.

This approach brought very promising results. The students began to look forward to my English classes with excitement and enthusiasm.
